Charlotte's Web

White, E.B. (1952). Charlotte's Web. New York, NY: Scholastic Inc.

Brief Annotation: This is the story of Wilbur and Fern. Fern is a young farm girl who falls in love with her little pig Wilbur. She takes care of him and helps him grow and treats him like her child. Wilbur grows into a healthy and strong pig and makes friends on the farm. One special friend Wilbur makes is with Charlotte who is a spider. She explains to Wilbur that he may suffer a sad fate someday, and decides to help Wilbur by turning him into a very special pig by writing amazing things about him in her web. People from all over come to see this miracle pig, and they enter a fair and Wilbur wins. Charlotte's fate comes quickly though and Wilbur has to lose his friend, but learns a lot along the way about friendship and love.

Genre: Animal Fiction

Grade Level: Grades 2-6

Readers who will like this: Students who have a passion for reading will enjoy this book greatly. It is a fairly advanced chapter book for students, so either they could read on their own, or it would be a great chapter book for at teacher to use during a read aloud. Anyone who enjoys animals and a good story will also love this book!

Response/Rating (1-4): 4, An absolute classic! This is another one of my favorite books of all time. I have re-read this one over and over again. Charlotte's web is a beautiful depiction of friendship and of the hard realities that face everyone in life.. we all one day will die. Charlotte and Wilbur stand the test of time and truly they can touch the heart of any reader.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: “ Has anyone ever been to a state fair? What types of animals do you see?”
