Fleischman, P. (2007). Glass Slipper, Gold Sandal: A Worldwide Cinderella. Illus. Julie Paschkis. New York, New York: Henry Holt and Company, LLC.
Brief Annotation: Fleischman takes the traditional Cinderella story and incorporates elements from over fifteen cultures and nationalities. For example, Cinderella gets to choose her outfit from a sarong, a kimono, or a cloak, which incorporates elements from three distinct Asian cultures. The book sweeps through the different cultures all while telling a familiar story.
Genre: Folktale
Grade Level: 1-3
Readers who will like this: Readers who like folktales, non-English beginning readers.
Response/Rating (1-4): ***. I found the illustrations kind of distracting in this book. The story is very interesting and I liked how it spanned many cultures. I love Russian literature and culture so it was fun to see that in a children's book.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Does anyone know the definition of "culture"?
