The Hello, Goodbye Window

Juster, N. (2005). The Hello Goodbye Window. New York, NY: Michael Di Capua Books.

Brief Annotation: This story is about a regular day that she spends with the Nanna and Poppy. The hello goodbye window is a window in the front of her grandparent’s house, where they play games and greet the day and night. It is a special part of the traditions that she has at her grandparent’s house. Although diversity doesn’t play a role in the text of the story it does in the illustrations. This book takes a journey into the young girls imagination and emotions.

Genre: Culturally diverse picture book

Grade Level: 3-6

Readers who will like this: Readers who like colorful illustrations would enjoy this book. Also, readers who may struggle with prosody may benefit from this book because the lines are broken up into smaller segments where natural breaks would be placed.

Response/Rating (1-4): 3. I enjoyed the story, but I felt like I needed adderall to read the story because the pictures were so busy. It was very difficult for me to focus. The page about making breakfast, I completely missed the text at the bottom of the page.
