A Sick Day for Amos McGee

Stead, P. (2010). A Sick Day for Amos McGee. Illustrator: Erin Stead. New York: Roaring Brook Press.

Brief Annotation: Amos McGee was always ready for a new day. Amos McGee was a zoo keeper and every day before he started his job he would visit with his friends; the elephant, the tortoise, the penguin, the rhinoceros and the owl. One day Amos woke up sick so he decided to stay home. His zoo friends waited for him…and wondered “Where is Amos?” Later that day the animals waited for bus number five to go visit Amos McGee. His friends were there to take care of Amos McGee just like Amos does for them every day.

Genre: Storybook, Picturebook

Grade Level: Pre K-2

Response/Rating (1-4): 4. This book is about friendship. Through great illustrations we see how tight a friendship can be, even if it’s between a human and animals.
