Hardworking Puppies

Reiser, L. (2006). Hardworking Puppies. Illus. Lynn Reiser. Orlando, Florida: Harcourt Books.

Brief Annotation: This is a story about ten different puppies who all want jobs. One by one the ten puppies leave each other to start their jobs.

Genre: Counting Book

Grade Level: Pre-K-2

Readers who will like this: Readers who are learning to count and subtract. The story of the working puppies makes subtracting seem simple and children can grasp the idea of subtracting visually.

Response/Rating (1-4): ** I like this book for the reason that it works on counting backwards from ten, not going up from one. It’s not the most interesting counting book that I have read but it’s still fun to read. The illustrations are wonderful and child-like which suites the audience for the book.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: What do you think will happen to this group of puppies once they find their own jobs?
