Papa Tells Chita a Story

Howard, E. (1995). Papa Tells Chita a Story. Illus. Floyd Cooper. New York, New York: Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers.

Brief Annotation: This is a book about a girl who is told a story from the Spanish War about her dad. In the story, her dad demonstrates bravery and courage as he volunteers to deliver a message across dangerous obstacles. The obstacles in this story may stretch the truth, but they do not stretch the fact that men risked their lives in this war and Chita’s dad is no exception.

Genre: Historical Fiction-Picture Book

Grade Level: 3-5

Readers who will like this: Readers who enjoy history and learning about how wars were like many years ago.

Response/Rating (1-4): *** I enjoyed this book as the story depicted dangerous obstacles this man had to go through in the Spanish war. I liked how the story was told by the dad who was telling his daughter the story of his past. This book also shows the relationship between father and daughter and how this girl admired her dad for being a hero during the war.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: What are some dangerous obstacles you have faced?

  1. This book depicts an historical time period (and event) that's included in social studies texts, but rarely fleshed out. I'm glad to know about it to add to my American history collection.
