She narrates the story through illustrations and poetry verse that describes the people, the land, the comraderie, and the experiences of some African American Pioneers as they venture forth in search of dreams and opportunity in Oklahoma.
Genre: Poetry
Grade Level: 3-6
Readers who will like this: Readers who enjoy poetry or lyrical stories, readers who enjoy stories about pioneers and strong women.
Response/Rating (1-4): 4. This is an inspiring and beautifully written story about a woman and her family as they start their new lives as pioneers and then farmers in the Oklahoma Territory.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: What does it mean to be a pioneer?
