Bibliographic Information (APA): Reiser, L. (2003). Ten Puppies. City published, State published: Greenwillow Books.
Brief Annotation: A mother dog has 10 pups. On each page she categorizes them into groups that always add up to ten. Starting with 1 in a group and 9 in the other, then 2 in a group and 8 in the other, then 3 in a group and 7 in the other until she gets back to a single group of ten dogs. It has a little riddle/joke at the end, asking what did all these puppies grow up to be, 10 dogs.
Genre: Counting Book
Grade Level: Pre-K- 2
Readers who will like this: Students who like math and counting and animals will like this book.
Response/Rating (1-4): I liked how this book showed that no matter which ways you grouped the puppies it would still always equal all 10 puppies. It shows addition in a more fun way.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: What are some different ways we could group these puppies? What are some different ways we could group all of our class?
Another book to add to your math-language arts list along with the book about ways to measure time.
ReplyDeleteTake a look at your before reading question--how would kids know about grouping the puppies before reading the book? Would you have some sort of manipulatives? Explain.
