After Tupac and D Foster

Woodson, J. (2008). After Tupac and D Foster. G. P. Putnam's Sons.

Brief Annotation: This novel tells the story of an 11-year old girl who is never named. She lives across the street from her best friend in Queens with her mom, a single mother. One day a new girl, D Foster, moves into the neighborhood and the three girls become the best of friends. They all idolize Tupac because they feel his music talks about their own lives. Becoming insepparable, the girls come of age in this book that blends their coming of age journey with the time period of the mid-nineties seamlessly.

Genre: Fiction.

Grade Level: 7-9.

Readers who will like this: Readers who like hip-hop. Readers who live in urban neighborhoods.

Response/Rating (1-4): *. My fiance taught this book recently in his high school classroom while they did a unit on hip-hop history and he recommended it to me. While I can see how this could be a valuable tool in showing the time period and music era, I could not get into this book and had to skip over some parts. This genre didn't appeal to me.
