Owl Moon

Yolen, J. (1987). Owl Moon. Illus. John Schoenherr. New York: Philomel Books.

Brief Annotation: Owl Moon is about a daughter and her dad who go on an adventure late at night. They go owling and the young girl knows she needs to be brave. Even though it’s in the dead of night and dark and cold, the story is beautiful as it shows the strong bond between daughter and dad.

Genre: Fiction

Grade Level: 2-4

One question you would ask before a read aloud: What is one thing you and a close relative like to do together?

Reading Strategy Connection: An instructional strategy that would tie well with Owl Moon is "All About...Books" from Tompkins on p. 1. "All About...Books" is a strategy used to focus on writing, and content for primary grades and English learners. The students choose a topic for a book. I think Owl Moon goes well with this instructional strategy because the story is about a father and daughter enjoying a hobby together. So the students could pick their own favorite hobby that they enjoy and want to write about. Next the students will brainstorm possible ideas for what they will write on each page of their book, or they can draw the pictures too. Then the students will write simple sentences to accompany their drawings. They will read the book to the teacher and make revisions and edits. Finally, they get to share their book to the class.
