Grasshopper Summer

Turner, A. (1989). Grasshopper Summer. New York: Aladdin Paperbacks.

Brief Annotation: In 1874, Sam and Billy White, along with their family moved from Kentucky to the Dakota Territory to start a new life. They packed up the wagon, some belongings, 2 horses and their dog Jake and headed down the open trail to Nebraska. Along the journey to their new home, these pioneers had to face loss and the fear of the unknown. The White family knew their new life was going to be hard work, they knew the winter was going to be tough and they had already thought about building everything from scratch, but what they didn’t know about was about the grasshoppers. After working hard as a family to build their farm, the grasshoppers came swooping in and damaged everything. Even though Sam was missing his old home, he and Billy didn’t want to leave their new home, after all the sweat and hard work they had put into it. Will they head back to their grandparents farm or will they stick it out and overcome this tragedy?
