The Breadwinner

Ellis, D. (2000). The Breadwinner. Toronto, Ontario: Groundwood Books/Douglas & McIntyre.

Brief Annotation: Parvana is a young girl who lives with her family in Kabul, Afghanistan. Her father and mother value education and both went to London to be educated at the University. However, since he has a foreign education, he is arrested and taken away from Parvana and her family. Since women are not allowed to go to school, or be outside unless covered from head to foot, Parvana’s family suffers without her father. As a result, Parvana cuts her hair and disguises herself as a boy and raises money for her family.

Response/Rating (1-4): ***This was a great book to read, especially if someone is not familiar with the Taliban. This book gives insight into Afghanistan and how different the culture is compared to America.
