Yo, Jo!

Isadora, R. (2007). Yo, Jo! New York, NY: Harcourt Children's Books.

Brief Annotation: Two young African-American brothers wait outside their apartment building for their grandfather arrive. Jomar, the younger brother, walks down the street to greet his friends with some slang. His older brother is supposed to supervise, and is questioned when his grandfather gets home about his use of slang....

Genre: Fiction, picturebook.

Grade Level: Pre-K through 2.

Readers who will like this: Students who live in urban neighborhoods.

Response/Rating (1-4): **. While I liked the illustrations (there are bright, vibrant colors and it really accentuates the urban neighborhood) in this book, I found myself questioning the point after I finished reading it. While the slang depicted is harmless and child-appropriate, I'm not sure I would encourage younger readers to use it.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: Does anyone know what "slang" is? Can you give an example?
