Seeger, L. (2007). First the Egg. New York, NY: Roaring Brook Press.
Brief Annotation: First the Egg is a creatively painted story of the concept of before and after. Each page has cutouts of the first idea, and the art work on each side of the page beautifully matches each cutout. It is an adorable piece about the long last question, what came first the chicken or the egg. Genre: Concept picture book
Grade Level: k-3
Readers who will like this: Readers who appreciate beautiful art work, and enjoy thinking about crazy concepts like what came first the cocoon or the butterfly (or the chicken or the egg).
Response/Rating (1-4): 4! This book is fun and colorful. I really enjoyed how all of the cutouts matched the story perfectly. My favorite part of the book is the cover; because you can decide what you believe came first, simply by removing the dust cover.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: What came first the chicken or the egg?
Reading Strategies Connection: Paper Bag Books: The children can come up with their own ideas of what came first, draw these ideas and create their own book.
