Flotsam

Wiesner, David. (2006). Flotsam. New York, New York: Clarion Books.

Brief Annotation: A boy is at the beach, looking at hermit crabs and crabs, when a wave washes an old underwater camera ashore. He develops the film inside the camera, and the pictures show an elaborate set of underwater scenes: shell cities, underwater aliens, and giant starfish, among others. The last picture shows a girl holding a picture of a boy holding a picture of a girl holding a picture. The images keep repeating, in different countries and historical periods. The boy decides to add a picture of himself holding the picture, and returns the camera to the ocean, where it journeys through more magical underwater worlds before it washes up in front of another child.
Genre: Wordless picture book
Grade Level: K-4
Readers who will like this: Readers who like pictures, readers who like to make their own stories to go along with the images, readers who have been to the beach.
Response/Rating (1-4): 4. I showed this book to several children, in grades 1-5, and each of them was enthralled by the pictures and developed interesting interpretations of the storyline of the book.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Have you ever wondered what is under the ocean?
