Polacco, Patricia. (2001). Mr. Lincoln's Way. Illus. Patricia Polacco. New York, New York: Philomel Books.
Brief Annotation: Eugene is a fifth grade bully who doesn't do his schoolwork, picks on younger kids and uses racial slurs. Mr. Lincoln, "the coolest principal in the whole world," decides that he needs to help Eugene deal with his anger and hatred. He notices Eugene watching the birds outside school, and finds out that Eugene knows a lot about birds from his grandfather. Mr. Lincoln soon involves Eugene in a project to attract more birds to the school's atrium. As Eugene becomes involved in the bird project, his behavior improves. Mr. Lincoln compares the various birds living together to the children from different backgrounds working together at the school. Eugene promises to be more like his bird-loving grandfather and less like his racist father.

Response/Rating (1-4): 4. Polacco dealt with issues of racism and bullying in a gentle but effective manner in this story. I think that a lot of children will understand the message of the story.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Why do you think some kids become bullies?
