You Read to Me, I'll Read to You
Hoberman, M. (2001). You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You. Illustrated by Michael Emberley. New York, NY: Little, Brown and Company.
Brief Annotation: There are several small poetry stories within this book. Each poem uses three different colors of text to indicate if the first reader, second reader, or both should read the stanza. The end of each poem ends the same as the title, “You read to me, and I’ll read to you.”
Genre: Poetry
Grade Level: Grade 2- Grade 5
Readers who will like this: Children who enjoy reading with another person would love this book. It gives the reader a chance to read poetry in a unique way. The text is quick-witted and funny so children would enjoy the words as well.
Response/Rating (1-4): This book deserves a 4! The stories within the book keep children interested and engaged in the reading. I read the book to children, using two different voices, and they all chanted the end of each story with me, “you read to me, and I’ll read to you!”
One question you would ask before a read aloud: How can a poem tell a story without having characters?
