Atalanta's Race: A Greek Myth

Climo, S. (1995). Atatlanta’s Race: A Greek Myth. Illustrated by Alexander Koshkin. New York , NY: Clarion Books.

Brief Annotation: Atalanta was banished from her kingdom as a newborn and raised by a hunter. Her hunter father taught her how to hunt and be an Olympian. She became known for her foot races and was summons by the King, her father. Atalanta decided to remain in the kingdom, and was to be wed. She chose her husband by holding a competition. Whomever could outrun her would become her husband and those who lost would be beheaded. Her last component, Melanion, was visited by Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, and given three golden apples to help him win the race. He won the race, and became her husband, but neither Melanion or Atalanta were grateful to Aphrodite for bringing them together, so she turned them into a lion and lioness so they could spend their lives hunting, racing, and caring about games.
