Bunting, E. (1991). Fly Away Home. Illus. Ronald Himler. New York, NY: Sandpiper.
Brief Annotation: Fly Away Home tells the story of a father and son who stay in an airport because they are homeless. Bunting gives painstaking realistic details into the lives of the homeless, like how they wear inconspicuous colors so as not to get noticed, how they wash up in the bathrooms of the airport, and how they sleep standing or sitting up. What sounds like a grim tale is highlighted by the theme of togetherness, family, and above all- hope.
Genre: Picturebooks, fiction.
Grade Level: 2-5
Readers who will like this: Students interested in social issues. Teachers teaching about homelessness. Students who like watercolors.
Response/Rating (1-4): ****. This was an incredibly moving book. The artwork and the story blend so seamlessly together and the story is heartbreakingly beautiful.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: What does it mean to be homeless?
