The Neighborhood Mother Goose

Crews, N. (2004). The Neighborhood Mother Goose. New York, NY: Greenwillow Books.

Brief Annotation: Nina Crews takes familiar nursery rhymes and tales and integrates them into her Brooklyn, NY neighborhood. Two girls clap their hands together along the streets of New York in "Pat-A-Cake" and neighborhood children play together in her new take on such classics like the cow jumping over the moon or the Peter Piper and his pickled peppers!

Genre: Mother goose book, picture book.

Grade Level: Pre-K through 3

Readers who will like this: Children just learning to read, children who memorize rhymes.

Response/Rating (1-4): ****. I would give this story a high rating just for the illustrations alone. I loved the integration of photographs and computer animations. I think children would really respond to the pictures of children, especially if they were close in ages.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: What is your favorite nursery rhyme?
