One Green Apple
Bunting, E. (2006). One Green Apple. Illus. Ted Lewin. New York, NY: Clarion Books.
Brief Annotation: On her second day at a new school, young girl Farah goes on a field trip to an apple orchard with her class. She cannot speak English, and distances herself from her classmates. She feels alone and isolated. But when the cider press is introduced by the orchard employees, all the children get to add their own apple to make a big pot of cider! All the children add bright red apples, but not Farah...she adds one crisp, green apple instead.
Genre: Fiction, picture book.
Grade Level: 1 through 3
Readers who will like this: Muslim students; students of different nationality than the majority of the class.
Response/Rating (1-4): ***. The artwork in this book was really stunning. I loved the colors and thought the story was interesting, though a little cheesy.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Have you ever felt isolated? How did you overcome it?
