Thank you, Mr. Falker

Polacco, P. (1998). Thank You, Mr. Falker. New York, NY: Philomel Books.

Brief Annotation: Trisha comes from a great family of educators; she is read to from a young age, and yet she still struggles with reading at school. The kids tease her so much that she finally begins to believe that she is dumb. Finally, a teacher notices that she is having difficulties and he kindly starts to work with her. After months of practice, she can finally read and comprehend a paragraph.

Grade Level: 4-8

Readers who will like this: Readers who like to read realistic stories about schools, readers who like happy ending books about a struggling main character, readers who may have had their own trouble with reading

Response/Rating (1-4): 4; Polacco stories are always circular. There are similar parts of her life in all of her books, in the writing and images. Her family is such a huge part of her life that you will find them in all of her books.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: Is there something that doesn’t come naturally to you? Did someone help you get better at it?
