Munsch, R. (2001). Up, Up, Down. Illustrated by Michael Martchenko. Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Scholastic Canada LTD.
Brief Annotation: One day Anna decides she wants to climb. She scales the refrigerator, a dresser, and then heads outdoors to climb a tree. Her parents yell for her to come down and both attempt to climb the tree to get Anna down, but end up getting hurt themselves while doing so. Anna climbs down out of the tree to bandage them up heeding their own advice of “be careful- don’t climb!”
Genre: Contemporary Realistic Fiction
Grade Level: Pre-K to Grade 3
Readers who will like this: Children who are interested in climbing will like to join Tyya on her adventure.
Response/Rating (1-4): The author has done a great job of making a simple activity of climbing to a new level. With this in mind, I would rate the book a 4. Readers can see themselves in Tyya and even be envious or gain an understanding of being safe while climbing to an adventure. It shows how not being safe causes you to fall, and get hurt. The illustrations are done in watercolor and display characteristics of tree animals acting like humans.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Before you were to climb something, what type of safety measures should you take?
