Willems, M. (2006). Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay up Late. Illus. Mo Willems. New York, New York: Hyperion Books for Children
Brief Annotation: This book is about a pigeon who wants to stay up late. The pigeon’s owner leaves for a while and asks the audience if they can keep an eye on the pigeon and make sure he doesn’t stay up late. The pigeon tries many tricks to get the audience to say yes, but it is the audience’s job to say no.
Genre: Picture Book
Grade Level: Pre-K- 2
Readers who will like this: All young readers will like this book because they are being asked to be part of the story. They have a job to do and that is to say no to the pigeon.
Response/Rating (1-4): **** I love this book because children are engaged as they read. They practice saying no, which is good for them to practice, and they are asked to be part of the book. They are responsible for the pigeon and they think that this book is so funny.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Why would you not want the pigeon to stay up late?
