Edwina

Willems, M. (2006). Edwin: The Dinosaur Who Didn’t Know She Was Extinct. Illus. Mo Willems. New York, New York: Hyperion Books for Children.

Brief Annotation: Edwina is a dinosaur who everyone loves. Edwina plays with the children and makes them cookies. Everyone loves Edwina, everyone except Reginald Von Hoobie Doobie. Reginald is the only one who knows the fact about Edwina, that she is extinct. He is ready to prove what he knows, but what he doesn’t know is how his news will affect Edwina.

Genre: Animal Fiction

Grade Level: K-2

Readers who will like this: Children will like this book because they have to use their imagination. Also, children will learn about what extinction means and this book can be related to science.

Response/Rating (1-4):*** I enjoyed this book because it was informative and focused on feelings rather than facts. Even though Reginald knew Edwina was extinct, and after trying to prove that fact over and over again, he realized that he didn’t care because Edwina was a wonderful friend. This book teaches kids that no matter what the truth about someone may be, kids can still be friends.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: What do you think would happen if Edwina found out she was extinct? Do you think she knows what extinct means?
