No, David!
Shannon, David. (1998). No, David! Illustrated by David Shannon. New York, NY: Scholastic Inc.
Brief Annotation: The first line of the book reads, “David’s mom always said…No, David!” The book follows David along his day making poor choices, getting into trouble, and his mom yelling to David to stop. He overflows the bathtub, walks through the house with muddy feet, playing with his food, and even picking his nose! At the end of the day, his mom calls him to her and she tell David she loves him and gives him a hug.
Genre: Contemporary Realistic Fiction
Grade Level: Pre- K to Grade 2
Readers who will like this: Boys will get a kick out of seeing David get into trouble, and pointing out what he did incorrectly.
Response/Rating (1-4): This book will certainly get a 4. The illustrations of this book are what make the book so incredible. It adds such dimension to the story and allows the non-text reading students the ability to read based on the pictures. It is also a good way to draw home a right vs. wrong discussion. Children will delight in seeing what David does incorrectly and children can brainstorm on what he could have done correctly to not get into trouble.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: What are some things you may do at home that you get into trouble for?
