The Perfect Nest
Friend, C. (2001). The Perfect Nest. Illus. John Manders. Cambridge, MA: Candlewick.
Brief Annotation: When Jack sets out to build the perfect nest, to attract the perfect chicken, to lay the perfect egg, to make the perfect omelet, he ends up with much more than he bargains for! With a chicken, a duck and a goose all vying for the comfortable nest, Jack tells them that he knows where there is an even better nest. They take off for the farmyard next door, leaving behind their precious eggs. Jack soon discovers he did make the perfect nest, as he becomes “papa” to the latest farmyard babies.
Genre: Fantasy, Picturebook
Grade Level: K through Grade 2
Readers who will like this: Children who enjoy animal stories, especially farmyard animal stories, Children with a good sense of humor
Response/Rating (1-4): 4, Young readers will enjoy the adventures of Jack the cat as he plans his strategies to collect the perfect egg for his dinner. The text is humorous and will keep a young reader’s attention as chicken, duck and goose each claim their spot in the perfect nest. The ending of the story results in good discussion material as to why Jack chose to stay with the babies. A good real aloud story as well with detailed gouache illustrations.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Have you ever visited a farm or seen pictures of a farm? What animals might live on a farm?
