Shrek

Steig, W. (1990). Shrek. Illustrated by William Steig. New York, NY: Farrar Straus Giroux.

Brief Annotation: Shrek is the ugliest creature in the land, and really likes it that way! His smell causes things to die, and as he wanders through the land people shriek and die. Shrek can glare and shoot red hot flames out of his eyes and he eats lightening. As he travels along he comes upon a witch who gives him the fortune that he will meet a donkey and a knight and finally will be led to the princess of his dreams! He finds the donkey and fights off the knight with his red hot flames, to be led to the princess who is even uglier than he is. They marry and live happily ever after.

Readers who will like this: Students who enjoy a humorous book with great illustrations. The book has fairly simple sentences so a younger reader would be able to take on the challenge, yet older and more advanced readers will still enjoy this book because it's such a fun story. Teachers who want to read a book and then show the movie could use this once, since the movie Shrek is such a great film too.

Response/Rating (1-4):4, Shrek is a great book! One of William Steig's best books, and such a great story that it was made into a much loved movie. Shrek is funny and the story is light hearted, bringing in the great lesson of how looks shouldn't matter. I really enjoyed reading Shrek, and was happy that it was slightly different than the movie. It's a classic.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: “Has anyone seen the movie Shrek?”
