Favorite Norse Myths

Pope Osborne, M. (1996). Favorite Norse Myths. Illustrated by Troy Howell. New York, NY: Scholastic Inc.

Brief Annotation: This book of myths tells the stories of the Norse gods and goddesses. It goes through the creation of the nine worlds, Odin's three quests, and the spells of the giants. It explains how these gods got their power. My favorite myth in this book was “How Thor Got His Hammer”. ( Pope Osborne, 1996, pg. 20). It explains that Thor was a very strong God and his wife, Sif, had beautiful hair. Loki (a scheming God) cuts of her hair and devises a plan to get other gifts from Gods. The other Gods come together and give Thor his hammer- his most precious gift.

Genre: Picturebook, Myth

Grade Level: 3rd - 8th Grade

Readers who will like this: Readers who are interested in Norse Myths, Gods and giants, will enjoy this book. These myths are great stories about the creation of worlds and magical people and are really fun to read about. A teacher who is doing a lesson on myths or legends would benefit greatly from having this book to read aloud. This is a more advanced book, with many words and is fairly long, so the reader will need to be a pretty efficient reader.

Response/Rating (1-4): 3, While I enjoyed the stories, the book was pretty long! I think all of the myths were very interesting and the illustrations in this book were wonderful, but these types of stories do not hold my attention very well. I think that people who like myths and legends really would enjoy this book though, so I think a 3 rating is pretty good.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: “Does anyone here know who Thor is?”
