Weisner, D. Flotsam. (2006). New York, NY: Clarion Books.
Brief Annotation: This wordless book tells the story of a little boy who finds a mysterious camera washed up on the beach. When he gets the pictures developed he finds photos of an amazing fantasy world under the sea. Evidence of what the sea creatures are really doing down there…
Genre: fantasy
Grade Level: k-5
Readers who will like this: Students who want to read complex stories but who do not have the skills yet to handle lots of text. Students with great imaginations.
Response/rating: 4 This was such a cool book! I would love to open to any page in this book and give it to a class as a writing prompt. There are so many ways to interpret these pictures, and yet a very clear plot still comes through.
One question you would ask before read aloud: What do you think a fish does all day under water? Use your imagination to create a mind picture of a fish’s world.
