Anno, M. (1980). Anno’s Journey. New York, NY: Philomel Books.
Brief Annotation: This worldless book takes us on a birds-eye-view through many towns and countrysides with a vantage-point that allows the reader to view many intricate stories happening at once. As if capturing a moment in time on each page, readers can watch two women cut hay, see two children chase a sailboat as it floats downstream, watch men tie logs to a cart, and a woman milk a cow. Each time a page is viewed, new details are noticed, some that allude to classic stories, such as Little Red Riding Hood, or scenes from famous paintings such as Seurot’s Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.
Genre: Fantasy
Grade Level:1-4
Readers who will like this: Children who love to look at pictures and make up their own story, and children and adults who enjoy searching for meaningful details and hidden pictures.
Response/Rating (1-4): 4 Readers will be delighted by the intricate detail and wit on each soft, neutrally colored landscape.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Can a book tell a story, or many stories, without words?
