My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother

Polacco, P. (1994). My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother. Illustrated by Patricia Polacco. New York, NY: Aladdin Paperbacks.

Brief Annotation: Life with an older brother is never easy, especially for the younger sister in this story. Her brother is constantly proving how much better he is at everything, and making fun of his sister for it. Until one day the traveling circus comes and changes their relationship. The story is intermingled with family values and the custom of wishing on the stars.

Genre: Contemporary Realistic Fiction

Grade Level: K- Grade 4

Readers who will like this: Any child who has a sibling will love this book! Whether you are the younger child relating to the older brother’s intimidations, or if you are that older brother pestering your younger sister, you will find humor and connection to the characters in the story.

Response/Rating (1-4): I would rate this book a 3.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: If you would wish on a star to change something in your life, what would it be?
