The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales

Scieszka, J. Smith, L. (1998). The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Fairy Tales. New York, NY: Puffin Books.

Brief Annotation: This book is a series of silly, cheeky stories. All of the stories share plots with a common fairy tale. However, the author puts a twist to end the story quickly. I loved that the story started on the first page before even the table of contents. Scieszka and Smith break every rule imaginable in the book. The illustration were dark and strange but the seemed strangely to fit the text.

Genre: Fable

Grade Level: 4-8

Readers who will like this book would like silly short tales that poke fun of traditional ideas, and imaginative and creative people who wonder about not following the rules

Response/Rating (1-4): **** This book was humorous and it kept me chuckling. I would defiantly read it over and over. I am sure each time I would pick up on quirky things that I missed. I could examine the illustrations all day.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: Have you ever thought a story should end differently? Do you enjoy making up your own stories?

  1. Do you mean "definitely would read it over and over" or "defiantly" (in which case, who are you resisting)?
