Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

Archambault, J. and Martin, Jr. B. (1989). Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Illustrated by Lois Ehlert. New York, NY: Scholastic.

Brief Annotation: The alphabet races in sequence to the top of a coconut tree, until at last Z reaches the top causing them all to fall! The grown up, upper case, letters race to help the injured lower case letters, again in sequence. By this time it is bedtime, and lower case A double dares them again!

Genre: Poetry/Alphabet Picturebook

Grade Level: PreK- Grade 1

Readers who will like this: Children who are interested in the alphabet or are beginning to learn the letters in the alphabet will love the humor brought about by this book.

Response/Rating (1-4): I would rate this book a 4 for the creative manner in which the alphabet is taught to young children. This is also one of my personal favorites!

One question you would ask before a read aloud: Who has ever had a race before? Do you know of any famous races or have you heard about any on tv, in the newspaper, or from your parents?
