The Hello, Goodbye Window
Juster, N. (2005). The Hello, Goodbye Window. New York, NY: Hyperion.
Brief Annotation: This book, told from the perspective of a young girl and illustrated by Chris Raschka, details her time spent with her grandparents. The central piece of the visits, the “hello, goodbye window” acts as a theme throughout the book, returning again and again as the medium for many different rituals and activities.
Genre: Picture book
Grade Level: K-3
Readers who will like this: readers who like to visit their grandparents, students who have a special place they enjoy being or routines they like performing, children who enjoy imaginative, colorful illustrations.
Response/Rating (1-4): **** Both author and illustrator work as experts to create a sentimental mood in this wonderful book. Though told through the eyes of a very young child, I felt myself relating to her sense of comfort in having established routines based on a special place and her joy at spending time with her grandparents. Students will easily relate to this story about relationships and mundane family rituals.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Can you think of a special place that you like to go to?
