Owen

Henkes, K. (1993). Owen. Illustrated by Kevin Henkes. New York, NY: Greenwillow Books.

Brief Annotation: A young mouse, Owen, struggles to give up his blanket. A neighbors suggestions to rid the blanket never pan out for the mouse’s parent, and Owen continues to keep his blanket with him at all times. Just before the start of Kindergarten, his mother comes up with the best idea yet! She turned Owen’s blanket into several handkerchiefs so he can have his blanket with him wherever he goes, and no one is the wiser.

Genre: Contemporary Realistic Fiction

Grade Level: PreK- Grade 1

Readers who will like this: A child that has a special possession or blanket that they have an attachment to. The reader would also enjoy stories about growing up and changes that one has to make when growing up.

Response/Rating (1-4): The book depicts experiences nearly everyone experiences in some way during their life, and so I would give it a 4.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: How many of you have a special object- like a blanket, stuffed animal, or something similar? Has anything ever happened to it? How did that make you feel?
