Demi. (2008) The Magic Pillow. New York, NY: Simon and Schuster.

Brief Annotation: This book, adapted from a Chinese folktale tells the story of a young boy from a poor family, who spends the night with a wise magician. The magician gives him a magic pillow that will allow him to get anything he desires. He spends the night dreaming of riches and fame, but wakes with the wisdom that the greatest thing he could have is his family and home.

Genre: Folklore
Grade Level: K-5
Readers who will like this: Children who like stories with a message. Children who like detailed pictures. Children interested in Chinese culture.
Response/Rating (1-4): *** I like the story and message in this book, but did not particularly enjoy the pictures. The pictures were very small and used only a few colors. It was however a charming story with an important message.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: If you could get anything you wanted what you ask for?
