A Light in the Attic

Silverstein, S. (1981). A Light in the Attic. New York, NY: HarperCollins Publishers.

Brief Annotation: Silverstein delivers another delightful poetry book that will make you both laugh and cry. The drawings that accompany each poem are equally good, and provide a nice, whimsical appeal to the poems. Titles like "Standing is Stupid" and "They've Put a Brassiere on the Camel" are enough to make one laugh without even reading the poetry.

Genre: Poetry

Grade Level: 1+

Readers who will like this: Students who enjoy drama and reading-aloud, students and teachers teaching word-play and writing.

Response/Rating (1-4): ****. I have always been a huge fan of Shel Silverstein and I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone. The poetry is fun and is very good at addressing children's minds, problems, and thoughts into interesting word play. Some of the subject matter is a little dark, but never inappropriate.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: Why do you think the author made these poems humorous? How does poetry make you feel?
