Genre: Picturebook; Biography

Grade Level: K-3

Readers who will like this: children interested in important historical figures, children whose attention is captivated by rich illustrations, children interested in peace and justice, readers curious about the civil rights movement.

Response/Rating (1-4): **** Rappaport’s narration introduces children to King’s work in a simplistic manner that does not skirt the hard realities that he faced. The book is honest and direct about racial inequality, hatred and violence, but also shares with readers King’s message of love, peace, hope and perseverance. The quotes from King ensure that his voice is present in this work in a powerful way. The fantastic, layered illustrations provided by Bryan Collier evoke the deep emotions involved in the civil rights movement.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: “What do you know about Martin Luther King Jr.?”
