Shiloh

Naylor, P. (2000). Shiloh. New York, New York: Aladdin Paperbacks.

Brief Annotation: Marty Preston is a young country boy that falls in love at first sight with a beagle he has found. He later realizes this beagle, he named Shiloh, is owned by Judd Travers. It wouldn’t have been so bad if Judd Travers was a nice man, but he wasn’t, and especially to his dogs. Marty returns the dog once to Judd Travers, but Shiloh appears at his doorstep, yet again. Is it really so wrong to help something in need? Marty Preston doesn’t believe so. In this book you will follow the journey of the love a boy can have for a dog and what he will do to protect him.

Genre: Realistic Animal Story

Grade Level: 1-4

Readers who will like this: Children/adults who love animals and their stories. Children/adults who love heartfelt stories about caring for others.

Response/Rating (1-4): 4. Love this book. It is a great size novel for those that are beginning to read bigger books and it is a great read for those of us that have been reading for a long time.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: Is it okay to do wrong if you are helping someone or something else out?

Reading Strategies Connection: Quickwrites (Yopp & Yopp, p. 51). I think it would be great to use quickwrite on a question like what I asked before they read the book. Maybe after reading the book their opinions may or may not have changed. Maybe they have experienced a time when they did something wrong to help someone else out. What a great way to enter into a book like this one and get the students thinking.
