Smoky Night

Bunting, E. (1994). Smokey Night. Illustrator: David Diaz. Orlando, Florida: Harcourt Books.

Brief Annotation: A young boy and his mother, along with their cat, watches while people riot out their window of their apartment. After they go to bed for the night they are awakened by the smell of smoke and the pounding on the door. As they race to get out of their burning apartment, Jasmine the cat is nowhere to be found. Through two cats and a young boy, a truly heartfelt message was delivered to the community that night. Getting along with others, no matter what their nationality is truly a blessing.

Readers who will like this: Teachers or parents teaching about violence and crime, the difference between right and wrong, and why we should accept others for who they are.

Response/Rating (1-4): 4. This book in simple terms shows us that getting to know people beyond the way they look can create relationships we never knew existed. This book also teaches us that people can do things that are not right, but that does not mean we have to join them.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: Has there ever been a time when you were frightened?
