Of Mice and Men

Steinbeck, J. (1937). Of Mice and Men. New York, NY: Penguin Group.

Brief Annotation: The book follows George and Lennie through their last bought of being traveling farmhands. Lennie is mentally challenged and trouble seems to find him, causing the pair to flee from one work place to the next. George and Lennie have a unique friendship the sees them thick and thin. Their dreams of owning their own farm to work was almost a reality when Lennie’s troubles find them once again.

Genre: Historical Fiction

Grade Level: Grade 4- Grade 8

Readers who will like this: This novel is geared toward upper elementary/middle school aged children or even older. The reader would enjoy stories pertaining to the historical way of life during the 1930s. There is a good account of what life was like to work for “the man”, and the encounters one could stumble upon while doing so.

Response/Rating (1-4): I would rate this book a 4. Of Mice and Men is a classic for a reason. Steinbeck does a phenomenal job of articulating the story and turmoil of George and Lennie.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: What would you be willing to endure in life for a friendship?

  1. How do you think this book was classified by genre when it was first published? It's an interesting question because at one time, the book was about the current time, right? When does a book become "historical"?
