Brief Annotation: Featuring poets, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes and Walter Dean Myers, this specialized anthology of poetry presents poems celebrating African American heritage and inspiration combined with beautifully illustrated artwork.
Genre: Poetry
Grade Level: Grade 5 and up
Readers who will like this: Young readers who like poetry anthologies, young readers who would benefit from reading poems that inspire hope for the future, young readers who would benefit from reading poems that focus on the strength of African American traditions
Response/Rating (1-4): 4, As the illustrator for the anthology, Tom Feelings, combines water colored sketches, along with textured paper shapes, to produce the pictures that accompany each poem in the book. In 1994, he was awarded the Coretta Scott King Award for his beautiful illustrations. Of the 13 poets which contributed to the project, he writes, “They understand that one way to project our positive hopes for the future is for young people to see their own beauty reflected in our eyes, through our work” (Feeling, 1993). The book serves as a wonderful inspirational resource for all readers of poetry.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: How does a poem inspire us?
