My Rotten Red Headed Older Brother

Polacco, P. (1994). My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother. New York, NY: Aladdin Paperbacks.

Brief Annotation: She was always jealous of her older brother, because he could always “out do” her. He would always be 4 years older than her. She tried everything she could, she even wished on a falling star to do something, anything better than him. She finally did it; she stayed on a merry go round longer, but when she attempted to get off the ride, something terrible happened. She fell, and her rotten redheaded older brother picked her up carried her home and ran for the doctor. After this event, their relationship would never be the same.

Grade Level: 4-8

Readers who will like this: readers who like reading about sibling rivalry, readers who like reading about realistic stories about family.

Response/Rating (1-4): 4; I love reading how Polacco takes images and passages from other books and incorporates them into other stories. (Hanging on the grass, and pictures in the background of the pages) It feels like a special treat for her devoted readers. This is an adorable story that anyone with a sibling can appreciate.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: Have you ever did something silly to win a competition?
